How to Fill a 60-Hole Capsule Filling Tray Faster Without Losing Accuracy

Why Speed and Accuracy Are Not in Conflict
Many people assume that working faster means making more mistakes. In capsule filling, the opposite is often true. When you use a repeatable sequence, your hands learn the pattern, and you stop second-guessing each movement. Accuracy comes from consistency: the same amount of powder in each hole, the same pressure when tamping, and the same motion when spreading. Speed comes from removing hesitation. If you organize your workspace and follow a fixed order, you can move quickly without skipping steps that affect dose accuracy. The 60-hole tray is small enough to handle in one sitting, so you can complete a full batch before fatigue sets in. That also helps maintain accuracy across all 60 capsules.

Set Up Your Station Before You Start
Most delays happen before you even touch the powder. Gather everything you need within arm's reach: your 60-hole tray, the base plate, the spreader, the tamper, empty size 0 capsules, your powder, a weighing scale, and a cleaning cloth. If your powder tends to clump, sift it first through a fine sieve. Clumpy powder spreads unevenly and forces you to go back and fix holes, which slows you down. Place the tray on a stable surface at a comfortable height. A shallow tray or a lipped mat underneath catches stray powder and makes cleanup faster. Pre-count your capsule bottoms and tops into two separate piles. This small step eliminates the pause of searching for caps mid-process.

Use a Smooth, Two-Pass Spreading Technique
Instead of pushing powder around randomly, use a two-pass method. First, drop a generous amount of powder onto the tray and spread it across all 60 holes with a flat spreader. Do not press yet. Let the powder fall into the holes by gravity. Second, use the spreader to sweep the excess powder back and forth once more, filling any holes that are still low. This takes only a few seconds. Then tamp lightly and evenly. If your tray comes with a tamper that fits all 60 holes at once, use it. A single even press is faster and more accurate than tamping hole by hole. For size 0 capsules, a light tamp is usually enough for most powders; a heavy tamp can slow dissolution and may cause variability. After tamping, add a second small amount of powder and spread again, then tamp. This two-pass fill gives you a full, consistent dose without overpacking. Separate the Capsule Loading and Capping Steps
One of the biggest time drains is trying to load capsules and cap them at the same time. Instead, separate the steps. First, place all 60 empty capsule bottoms into the tray. This is easiest if you pour them onto a clean cloth and gently press the tray down onto them, or use a capsule holder if your tray has one. Once all bottoms are seated, fill and tamp the powder. Then, take the tray top or a cap-setting plate and place all 60 tops at once. Press down evenly to close the capsules. If you do it one by one, you will lose both time and consistency. Working in batches of 60 is already efficient, but separating loading from capping lets you focus on one motion at a time, which reduces errors. Check for Common Accuracy Traps
Speed will not help if your doses vary. Watch for three common issues. First, uneven powder levels: after spreading, look across the tray at eye level. If some holes look lower, add a pinch of powder and spread again before tamping. Second, powder on the rim: excess powder on the top edge can prevent the caps from seating fully, causing leaks or partial closes. Wipe the rim with a dry cloth or your finger before capping. Third, overfilled capsules: if the powder mound is too high, the cap will not close completely. Tamp a little more firmly or remove a small amount. These checks take only a few seconds and prevent having to redo an entire batch. There is more on capsule filling speed in the same guide.
